Thought for the Day Thursday 7th May

THURSDAY 7th MAY

Thank God for Governments

Today in my daily readings I have just finished reading the book of Judges. There is a phrase in that book that appears four times: “In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.”

If you read the events before that phrase appears you find: The Story of Micah, who together with his mother, commissions a silversmith to make an idol. When the idol is made, Micah makes his son the priest. Without going into too much detail, this would appear to be a breach of the first two commandments, and a disregard of the law which says a priest must come from the house of Levi. Then you find the story of a man who takes the body of his concubine, who has been sexually assaulted by a mob to the point of death, cuts it into twelve pieces and sends them to each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Finally, we have the circumventing of an oath, and the arranged abduction of two hundred virgins.

“In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit.”

In those days, where there was no king, there was no government. Today we have governments, some with kings and some without.

The book of Judges gives us examples of what happens when people are left to their own devices.

I was going to head this thought – ‘Thank God for good government’. Having contemplated the stories of the book of Judges, I thank God for government, and pray that it would be good.
