Thought for The Day Monday 4th May

As I continue my reading of Matthew’s account of the crucifixion, I am struck once again by what I think of as one of the most fearful and challenging verses in the Bible. It is Jesus’ cry from the cross. Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani? My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

In this moment, in his physical pain and agony Jesus suffers the spiritual torment of the abandonment of his Father. Why? Because at this moment all the sins of the world, from the beginning of time to the end of time, are placed on him. At this moment the God who cannot look upon sin, turns his face away. The penalty for the sins of the whole world is paid by Jesus on the cross.

The thought that one person, at one moment, should bear the burden, hold the guilt of every sin ever committed, is a fearful thought.

Why is it challenging? It is a challenge to the life of sanctification, to the life of holiness, because every sin that I commit, whether in thought, word or deed, adds to the agony of Jesus on the cross.

Prayer: Lord keep me from sin, and lead in the paths of godliness. Amen.
