Thought for the Day Friday 17th April

FRIDAY 17th APRIL

It is now six days since Easter Sunday and the last appearance of Jesus to his disciples. The only piece of information the gospels give us about the events of the week comes in John chapter 20, when the disciples tell Thomas that they have seen the risen Jesus. We are not told where Thomas was on Easter Sunday or how or why he missed the first resurrection appearances of Jesus. Perhaps he just wanted to be on his own and grieve for the loss of his friend - we do not know. It is true though, that different people deal with their grief in different ways. Some want to be with others and find support in the company of friends, while others want to be left alone to come to terms with their loss in their own way.

When we read the passage in John there is a tendency to concentrate on Thomas as the main character, but for a moment I want us to think about the other disciples. The disciples, full of enthusiasm because they have met with the risen Jesus and have seen death conquered, share this news with Thomas, only to be met with disbelief and a call to ‘prove it’. The reaction that we get today when we share the good news of Jesus with people, when we tell them about what Jesus means to us, and what he has done for us, is not much different. We are met with disbelief, and sometimes we are dismissed with the phrase ‘prove it’. We are not told how the disciples reacted to Thomas, but we do know that Jesus gave Thomas the proof he needed.

As we share the good news with others, let us not be discouraged by their reactions, but take them to God in prayer, believing that the one who gave Thomas the proof that he needed to believe, will give the proof that they need to those we pray for.
