Thought for the Day, Good Friday 10th April

GOOD FRIDAY 10th APRIL

“The kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.”

For years as a preacher I felt under real pressure whenever the major Christian festivals came around, at Christmas and Easter. I would struggle with the idea that I had to say something new, to an audience that had heard the story so many times. I was released from this pressure a few years ago, when I realised that I did not need to say anything new. All I had to do was retell the old, old story in a way that was relevant to today. I have nothing new to say about Good Friday, it is the account of sacrificial giving brought about by love.

Over recent weeks I have heard on the news of parents going hungry in order to feed their children – here is sacrificial love.

Over the years I have read about people donating a kidney to save some member of their family – here is sacrificial love.

I can remember an account of a priest in a Nazi concentration camp taking the place of someone who was about to be executed (shamefully I can no longer remember the priest’s name) – here is sacrificial love.

In the last few weeks I heard the account of an elderly person refusing to be put on a ventilator so it could be used to save the life of someone younger – here is sacrificial love.

“Greater love has no man than this, than a man lays down his life for his friends.”

“By this God demonstrated his love for us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.”

This Good Friday my response is the same as always: “Lost in wonder, love and praise.”
